EDIT Wins International Development Award
ACMaps is a GIS application developed for the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines to simplify mining lands information management. Developed by BLAZE I.T. of Sudbury, Ontario ACMaps was recognized for excellence at an international conference for users of GenaMap software held in Fort Collins, Colorado. Participants at the conference and a technical committee awarded BLAZE I.T. Gold in Systems Design and Silver in application originality.
The Automated Claim Map System (ACMaps) is based on GenaMap, a state-of-the-art GIS software and Oracle RDBMS. ACMaps will be used by the Mining and Land Management Branch to improve claim map information management to the industry's benefit. Approximately 5,000 claim maps are used in the province as a geographical reference to land status by mining companies, prospectors and claim stakers. Currently, claim maps are updated manually by staff in the Mining Recorder's Office. ACMaps will eventually replace and speed-up this process while significantly reducing the possibility of introducing errors. "This format for housing land status information will provide the public with a more reliable information base to make determinations on what land is or is not available to staking, minimizing conflicts with other users and owners of the land" says Mark Hall, Chief Mining Recorder for the province of Ontario.
As an added benefit, the new standardized claim maps produced by ACMaps system will be more legible, more accurate and easier to work with than the current mylar based map sheets. Built-in linking capabilities will also eventually allow users to access information from other databases held in CLAIMS and ERLIS.
ACMaps is the culmination of three separate projects awarded to BLAZE I.T.. "ACMaps is a monumental step forward by the Ministry in its ability to provide accurate and timely services to the public." says Dave Salter BLAZE I.T. Manager of Spatial Information Technologies.
